Poems, stories, essays and plays
There are many different kinds of things you can write! You can write poems, stories, plays and essays. You can write a made up story (fiction) or you can write about real life (non-fiction). You can draw illustrations (pictures) to go with your writing, you can find illustrations on one of the websites listed below or you can cut pictures out of old magazines. If you want to, you can even turn what you've written into a book by using a piece of cardboard as a cover and sewing, stapling or gluing the pages together.
Writing a great story
Kirsty has published two books, The Chalk Giraffe and Why is There a Hole in the Wall? (which you can download for free!), and written lots of other stories just for fun. Here are some of Kirsty's tips for writing a great story...

Start by thinking what characters (people, animals or creatures) you want in your story

Who is the main character or hero of your story?

What are the characters in your story like? What do they look like? How do they act?

Next think about an exciting way to start your story. If you're struggling to come up with an idea, try one of the story starters on the websites listed below.

Now think about what what will happen in the middle of your story. What will happen to your main character? What events will take place? What will the climax of your story be?

Don't forget the ending! What will happen to the characters at the end of the story?

Use your imagination and have fun!

If you need help planning your story, create a storyboard or spider diagram to help you plan.
